BDS curriculum is based on the teaching of dental sciences using a curriculum in which several types of teaching strategies are used such as interactive lectures, group discussions, laboratory, practical and clinic training, as well as community-based services. The curriculum uses evidence-based learning strategies such as problem solving, case studies and presentations of researched topics. The curriculum is composed of twelve semesters where courses start from basic sciences toward the comprehensive clinical training. Although the first year of the program is considered as preparatory year for students, efforts are made to make it more relevant to the field of dentistry. This year is followed by basic medical science courses and introduction to dentistry and the basics of dental anatomy and morphology which prepare the students to the applied dental sciences later. For all clinical courses there is a preclinical component in which the student is trained in special laboratories before performing treatments on patients. Both aspects of human disease and treatment will be taught in this curriculum with more concentration on dental skills in managing patients. The clinical components of the curriculum starts early at the 6th semester were students are introduced to basic patient’s management, problem diagnosing and basic treatment planning. Students then continue to give more dental care to patients gradually until reaching the comprehensive dental clinics where the patient is provided with a comprehensive treatment during the semester. Students are required to finish many comprehensive cases during the final year of the curriculum. All these dental skills in patient management are supported by strong knowledge related to pathology and medicine. The curriculum also covers many important aspects of current dentistry such as the interaction of student with community by providing community dental service through their study period. More attention is given to patients with special needs to provide them with the dental care they need. Comprehensive patients care and continuous clinical seminars with comprehensive treatment plans discussions are well integrated in this curriculum.
