This\u00a0page explains how the Grade Point Average (GPA<\/strong>)\u00a0is
\ncalculated in a\u00a0student’s academic record. It also gives definitions of\u00a0the
\nterms printed on the grade transcripts. Click on the\u00a0illustration to the right

CR<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe credit hours assigned to a course.<\/p>\n

LG<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe letter grade assigned to students in a course.<\/p>\n

PT<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe points assigned to a course. It is deduced by multiplying the numerical
\ngrades by the number of credits assigned.<\/p>\n

EHR<\/strong><\/span>
\nEarned Hours: the total number of credit hours awarded to the student for
\nsuccessful completion of academic course work or its equivalent transfer
\ncoursework. In other words, it is the sum of credit hours in all courses with a
\nletter grade (A+ to D, T, CR).<\/p>\n

QHR<\/strong><\/span>
\nQuality Hours: the total number of hours used in calculating the quality points.
\nIt is the total number of numerically-graded credit hours (A+ to F).When a
\ncourse is repeated, the last instance of the course is added to QHR and all
\nearlier ones are ignored.<\/p>\n

QPT<\/strong><\/span>
\nQuality Points: the total points (PT) awarded to the student. It is by the
\nsummation of points (PT); in other words, it is the sum of points (PT) in all
\ncourses with a letter grade (A+ to F, DN).<\/p>\n

GPA<\/strong><\/span>
\nGrade Point Average: the average points scored in all attained quality-hours.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

How Semester and Cumulative Grade Point Averages are
\nCalculated?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

In any semester, a student’s GPA is calculated based on the letter-grades
\nattained. In calculating the GPA the following principles are taken into
\nconsideration:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Grades of courses not included in the Cumulative GPA contribute to the
    \nSemester GPA but not to the Cumulative GPA<\/li>\n
  • When a course is repeated, the last instance of the course is added to
    \nQHR and all earlier instances are disregarded<\/li>\n
  • The calculation of Cumulative EHR, QHR, QPT, and GPA is recursive in the
    \nsense that the value for the current semester is calculated taking into
    \naccount the values for the previous semester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Semester EHR =<\/b> the total number of numerically-graded credit hours in A+
